Watching the flurry of birds outside my windows is a blessing to me . . . a simple pleasure that never gets old! As I watch them, I think of Someone else who's watching them and who sees every one that falls. (Matt. 10:29) And more importantly, I'm reminded that He's watching over me. . . that He sees every detail of my life, every need, every tiny step of faith. He sees . . . and He responds in unconditional love! I like the comforting words of the following old hymn written by Civilla Martin and published in 1905. No one can sing it like Ethel Waters did when she sang with the Billy Graham Crusades around the world!
Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heav’n and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
EDIT 2:30 p.m : I just added a beautiful version of the song by Selah to my playlist (bottom right sidebar) , so turn up your volume if you'd like to hear it.

What a great old hymn - good reminder!
I can just hear Ethel Waters singing this! I loved this post and the pic. Words I needed to read today! Love you.
I've been encouraged this morning, once more, to trust in His care. He is always there.
I love watching the birds too and yesterday I spent some time sitting out on the patio doing just that The sun was quite warm for a February day here. Sometimes they are a little leery of me being there but do adjust after awhile as the feeders are quite close. That hymn is a favorite.
Such a sweet picture and such a powerful hymn.
Such a cute little bird! Yes, we were like-minded, weren't we? His promise and provision never fail.
What a sweet little picture, it almost looks like a painting. I have always loved this song, too!
"His Eye is on the Sparrow" was one of my Mom's favorite hymns.. I love it too..
I also love my backyard birds... And God love them --and me... Hallelujah!
Hugs,
Betsy
A beautifully timely message for me. Thank you so much for sharing. Blessings to you and yours.
Glenda...I love this picture with the little bird and the verse running across it. And your words hit home....No worries...not with Him in our corner..running with us. Have a great week. ☺
Such a beautiful post, and so true - that is one of my favorite songs, it always makes me cry!
Listened to your soundtrack, "His Eye is on the Sparrow", and it was so lovely. Thanks.
(Why do we find birds so exquisitely beautiful?!)
